Nikon has?announced the D600, a full-frame DSLR camera for professional and enthusiast photographers that, while expensive, is far cheaper than its competition.

At $2,100, it's no impulse buy, but it has perhaps the most coveted feature in digital photography: a full-frame sensor. This means that the image sensor in the camera is roughly the same size as a frame of 35mm film, as compared with the much smaller sensors in consumer DSLRs, mirrorless cameras, and point-and-shoots.

A full-frame sensor allows more light to be captured, lets lenses show the full range of angles they are billed to show (on the popular APS-C sensors, a lens labeled 35mm is more like 50mm), and generally provide a photography experience that's closer to the film cameras of yesteryear.

The D600 has 24 megapixels, a 3.2" 640-by-480 LCD, a moisture-sealed magnesium-reinforced body, and generally all the features photographers expect in a high-end DSLR. In a pleasant surprise, its viewfinder offers 100 percent coverage, meaning what you see through it is exactly what will be captured; less expensive cameras often have less than 90 percentcoverage, making framing shots with precision more?difficult.

Its nearest relatives are Canon's new and popular 5D Mark III and Nikon's own D800, but the 5D goes for at least $1,000 more (its MSRP is $3,499) and the D800 for a bit less than that. The D600 doesn't have all of their features, and includes a few questionable ones (a "Scene" mode on the dial that is extremely unlikely to be used by people buying $2,100 camera bodies), but it will likely be popular nevertheless?? as a second camera for a photographer used to working in full-frame, the price can't be beat.

The camera should be available on Sept. 18 worldwide, and will come with a?24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 VR zoom for an extra $600.

(AP) ? The city's public schools will stay closed for at least one more day, but leaders of the Chicago Teachers Union and the school district kept talking Thursday, with both sides saying they were drawing closer to a deal to end the nearly weeklong strike.

"We are optimistic, but we are still hammering things out," said Karen Lewis, the union president.

Word of the progress in negotiations came less than a day after the school board offered to modify a system that would use student test scores to help evaluate teacher performance.

Under an old proposal, the union estimated that 6,000 teachers could lose their jobs within two years. An offer made late Wednesday included provisions that would have protected tenured teachers from dismissal in the first year of the evaluations. It also altered categories that teachers can be rated on and added an appeals process.

Classes were to be canceled for a fifth day Friday. And the union called a special delegates meeting for that afternoon, when the bargaining team is scheduled to give an update on contract talks.

Late Thursday, the school board said its latest proposal was in the hands of the union and that the union bargaining team was meeting separately to discuss it.

Board spokeswoman Becky Carroll expected a response later in the night.

"We are at the brink of getting all the key issues addressed so that we can move forward with getting a deal and getting our kids back to school," she said.

Carroll said the main sticking points are still the evaluation system and the union's demands that laid-off teachers get top consideration for rehiring. The district worries that could result in principals being forced to hire unsuited teachers.

"We've made many modifications over the last several days to our proposal," Carroll said. "We feel that we're there. And at this point, it's in the CTU's hands to bring it to a close."

Negotiations resumed Thursday with an air of optimism. Lewis predicted that students could be back in class by Monday, a week after 25,000 teachers walked out.

"We've made progress in some areas but still we have a way to go," she said . "Teachers, paraprofessionals and clinicians remain hopeful but energized."

Jackson Potter, staff coordinator for the union, said a host of issues were still on the table, ranging from the evaluations to air conditioning in schools.

"There's a sense of urgency today," said the Rev. Jesse Jackson, who stopped by the hotel where the negotiators were working Thursday and spoke to reporters. Earlier in the week, Jackson said the two sides were talking past each other.

The new optimism also was evident among teachers who marched Thursday along Michigan Avenue. They were joined by marching bands and protesters carrying balloons, pushing strollers and waving Chicago flags.

In the crowd was high school history teacher Anthony Smith, who wants the district to be fair and give all public schools the same resources so they can succeed. The negotiating points include a policy to hire back teachers who get laid off due to school closures.

"One school being closed down because they didn't give it proper resources and proper attention is unfair," said Smith, a 25-year classroom veteran.

Earlier, teachers picketed at their schools, as they've done every day this week.

"I know that we will have a good resolution to this, and I do believe it will be soon," said Michelle Gunderson, an elementary school teacher on the city's North Side. The negotiators "do not mean to have us be embroiled in this for longer than we have to."

School districts nationwide have grappled with issues surrounding teacher assessments. The Obama administration has given states incentives to use student performance as a component of evaluations, though the issue has been most contentious in Chicago.

Teachers say it's unfair to use test scores to evaluate them, citing the many factors beyond their control that affect student learning: poverty, hunger and the inability to speak fluent English, to name just a few.

Chicago's walkout canceled class for approximately 350,000 students and left parents scrambling to make other arrangements for young children. The district has kept some schools open on a limited basis, mostly to provide meals and supervision. More than 80 percent of Chicago public school students qualify for free or reduced-price lunches.

The walkout is the first Chicago teachers strike in 25 years. A 1987 walkout lasted 19 days.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has called the strike unnecessary and repeatedly urged the union to continue negotiating with students in class.

Ryan says Jimmy Carter era was better than Obama's

(AP) ? Paul Ryan delivered a scathing criticism of President Barack Obama's stewardship of the nation's economy Monday, arguing that even conservative punching bag Jimmy Carter's presidency was better as Democrats streamed to North Carolina to nominate Obama for a second term.

"The president can say a lot of things and he will," the Republican vice presidential candidate told more than 2,000 supporters in East Carolina University's student recreation center, about 230 miles east of the Democratic National Convention site in Charlotte. "But he can't tell you that you're better off. Simply put, the Jimmy Carter years look like the good old days compared to where we are right now."

The message, comparing today's economic problems with the troubled economic conditions of the Carter administration, is part of a broader GOP strategy to ask voters whether they are better off now than they were four years ago. Polling suggests the criticism may resonate with voters who continue to like Obama personally but are frustrated with the pace of economic recovery two months before Election Day.

Democrats argued that conditions have improved since Obama took office, with both the president and Vice President Joe Biden focusing Monday on the administration's 2009 rescue of U.S. automakers, which GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney opposed at the time. At a union rally in Toledo, Ohio, Obama said the jobs that were preserved help workers enter the middle class while the auto companies symbolize the country's innovative and industrial abilities.

"If that is not worth fighting for, than what is?" he said.

Republicans said Obama was running away from a poor economic record.

"He's run out of ideas," said Ryan. "So that is why he's running a campaign based on envy and division, based on frustration and anger. Hope and change has now become attack and blame."

Before leaving Greenville, Ryan told an overflow crowd of about 700, "After another four years of this, who knows what it'll look like then. We're not going to let that happen."

Positioning themselves to counter the claims Democrats will make during their gathering, about 50 GOP officials gathered in a temporary headquarters just outside the perimeter of the Democratic convention site. Romney's team, backed by the Republican National Committee, will host daily news conferences, release Web videos and feature prime-time speakers including South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin and RNC Chairman Reince Priebus.

"Here in Charlotte, the president is going to be on defense," said Reince Priebus, the GOP chairman, who hosted a Monday news conference to launch his party's "Obama Isn't Working" rapid response center in Charlotte.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio initially was scheduled to visit Charlotte as well, but he likely will not because of a personal conflict, according to a Republican aide.

Romney, meanwhile, will spend much of the week in New Hampshire and Vermont preparing for three fall debates with Obama, the first on Oct. 3.

On Monday Romney relaxed with his wife at their lakeside estate in New Hampshire, taking a midmorning boat ride to fuel his 29-foot Sea Ray and pick up a Sea Doo jet ski that needed repairs.

Ryan will play a more prominent role in day-to-day campaigning during the week. After visiting in North Carolina on Monday, he was scheduled to campaign Tuesday in Ohio and Iowa. Visits to Colorado, California and Washington state also were being planned.

The Romney campaign has distributed fresh talking points to supporters seizing on the idea that Obama has failed to deliver and linking the president to Carter.

One talking point echoes Ryan's comments in Greenville: "Every president since the Great Depression, except Jimmy Carter and President Obama, who asked voters for a second term could look back at the last four years and say: 'You are better off today than you were four years ago.' No president has ever asked to be re-elected with this many Americans out of work."

In the most recent Associated Press-GfK poll, 28 percent said they were better off than four years ago, while 36 percent said they were worse off and 36 percent said they were in about the same financial position.

Another Republican talking point suggests there is only one remedy: "If we want a new direction, we need a new president."

Red Sox in tatters

Bobby Valentine: ?The Emperor?s coming here?
Larry Lucchino:?That is correct, Commander. And, he is most displeased with your apparent lack of progress.
Bobby Valentine: We shall double our efforts.
Larry Lucchino: I hope so, Commander, for your sake. The Emperor is not as forgiving as I am.

With the team in tatters on the West Coast ? six straight losses, outscored in the six games by an astounding 54-15 ? the Boston Herald?s Michael Silverman reported Monday morning that?owner John Henry and general manager Ben Cherington have flown to Seattle, where the Sox will begin a three-game series against the Mariners today.

There have been no votes of confidence or anything like that. And there have been no real justifications for one even if there had been. It seems inevitable that Bobby Valentine is a one-and-done manager for the Red Sox, even if what has happened this year cannot be fairly laid at his feet. ?He was dropped in to an untenable position to being with in a job unsuited to his strengths.

Still, failure is failure and it?s hard to envision a situation in which Valentine is the manager for this team in 2013.
