Methods for making jobs in banking come to you

Job Market

By Sarah Butcher, 09 Jul 2013

It?s a clich?, but unfortunately true: looking for a job is itself a full time job, just without the camaraderie, commute and compensation associated with actual employment. If you eliminate the hassle of looking for work, you could have a lot of free time to spend meandering about in the sun.

How can you make top banking headhunters?come to you? We asked some top headhunters, and some careers advisors. This is what they said.

1. Make sure your social media presence is impeccable?

Most headhunters have their own proprietary ?market maps? which tell them who?s working where and what they do there. Nevertheless, they are also prone to scouring the web in search of potential hires. If you have a comprehensive presence on social media, they?re more likely to come across you and call you up.

?Whatever Google shows when people search for your name has effectively become your CV,? says Janet Moran of The CV House, a CV writing specialist which works with senior banking professionals. ?You need to make sure that the information that?s publicly available about you on the web is comprehensive and accurate.?

2. Maximize your personal SEO

Just as companies spend fortunes on search engine optimization to ensure they rank near the top of Google searches, so you need to optimize your CV. Whether recruiters are searching an online CV database or the web, your CV is a piece of content and it needs to be as searchable as possible.

Moran advises that you spend some time studying advertisements for the kinds of jobs you?re interested in. Look at the skills they?re asking for and the words that are used to describe these skills. Weave these deftly into your online CV or profile.

?You need to know the skills and experience that your target audience is looking for and then target your CV towards that audience,? says Moran. ?It sounds simple, but a lot of people don?t do it.?

3. Increase your visibility in every way possible?

If you want jobs to come to you, you need to be visible. Having excellent personal SEO is one way of increasing your visibility, but it?s not the only way.

Headhunters will often talk to clients to get soundings about who the best bankers are in a particular market said?St?phane Rambosson, managing partner at search firm the Veni Group. ?You need to make sure that clients will give you good references,? said?Rambosson. ?Do your job well and devote time to making sure clients say nice things about you.?

It will also help if you?re named in the press, or speak at conferences. In some instances, Rambosson said senior M&A bankers have been known to hire personal press officers to help manage their image in the market.

4. Get colleagues and ex-colleagues to recommend you?

?The best way for a headhunter to find you is when you?re recommended by one or two respected people,? says Oliver Rolfe, managing director at the Spartan Partnership. ?If any of us get a recommendation from a client in particular, we are likely to take a candidate more seriously.?

5. Resort to extreme measures?

If you?re truly desperate and aren?t averse to possible humiliation, you can walk the streets wearing a sandwich board. This will take time, but will get out in the sun. You could also spend several hundred pounds on a conspicuously placed billboard advertising your availability.

The Army's Insurgent Tracking Software Is Now Being Used to Track Gangs

The Army's Insurgent Tracking Software Is Now Being Used to Track Gangs

We all know that social media is the criminal's worst enemy. But this summer, a group of MIT researchers are collaborating with police to test software that can reliably predict whether a person is part of a gang based on their social networks, building on similar software used to track insurgents in Afghanistan.

For the past decade or so, the Army has used a number of similar pieces of software to visualize the relationships between suspected and known insurgents involved with the development of improvised explosive devices. It works by grouping many individuals by levels of association?and by doing so, gives researchers a way to recognize system-wide patterns and predict who might be involved in a particular operation.

The Army's Insurgent Tracking Software Is Now Being Used to Track Gangs

According to MIT's Technology Review, there are plenty of sociological similarities between insurgents and American street gangs. "In the last 10 years or so, researchers have revolutionised the way military analysts think about insurgency and the groups of people involved in it," explains the Review. "Their key insight is that insurgency tends to run in families and in social networks that are held together by common beliefs."

So it makes sense that the insights gleaned by Army intelligence could help out police officers at home. That hunch was confirmed on June 28th, when a group of MIT researchers published a paper in Physics and Society that details how a similar software is being used to track gang violence.

The software is called Organizational, Relationship, and Contact Analyzer, or ORCA, and it groups people in a particular community by their known relationships, as well as their arrest records. Based on the algorithm, they can predict whether a particular person is likely to be a gang member; It's also able to map "corner crews," which operate hyper-locally, and "seed sets," or individuals who are highly influential.

For this particular study, ORCA was tested on a three-year history of 5,400 arrests. Based on those numbers, it revealed 11,000 relationships, created a network map of 468 members belonging to about 20 gangs. The analysis is continuing through this summer in a "major metropolitan area," though they won't name which one. Eventually, the software could become ubiquitous in police stations nation-wide. It seems that crime, just like business, all comes down to relationships. [Technology Review]

Prescott parade emotional for town

PRESCOTT, AZ - On Saturday, residents in Prescott lined the streets of downtown to take part in the annual rodeo parade.

But the event has new meaning following the tragic loss of the 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots.

It was an emotional day as onlookers paid tribute to the brave men and their families.

The world?s oldest rodeo is 126 years old. This year it was a little different.

A tribute at the beginning of the parade honored the 19 fallen firefighters who died fighting the Yarnell Hill Fire southwest of Prescott.

Aboard a hotshot fire truck were the family members of those heroes who sacrificed their lives.

?Just seeing all the names of everybody that passed away, it?s just really hard,? Michelle Groves said.

It was not only an emotional day but one that left many people speechless.

It was a devastating loss for this tight-knit community and a reminder that life is often cut way too short.

Five Principles for Christian Writers:?Walk in a Manner Worthy of Your Call to Write

Text: Ephesians 4: 1 ? 6
Focus: Ephesians: 4: 1b ? 3

Are you a Christian writer that writes inspirational fiction or devotions to encourage Believers in Jesus Christ? Maybe you are a writer whose drive is sharing Christian themes and principles for the mainstream market. Whatever your motivation, ?walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called,? Ephesians 4:1b.

Ephesians 4:1-6 (English Standard Version) says,

I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit?just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call?one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

These verses give five principles that will help you: Walk In A Manner Worthy Of Your Call To Write

Principle One: Humility ? ?to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility? ? Ephesians 4: 1b?2a

As a Christian writer you should be full of Jesus, not self. The temptation is to be full of ourselves. When this happens, we are at risk of treating others with contempt. It should be about others, not ourselves.

Principle Two: Gentleness ? ?to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience,? Ephesians 4: 1b- 2a

As a Christian writer you should be bold, but under control. This does not mean to be a wimp. Just as a powerful racehorse is under the control of the jockey, as a Believer we need to be under the control of the Spirit of the Living God. Share the love Jesus and his teachings without beating the reader over the head with the Holy Bible. Share how God?s Word is applicable t everyday living.

Principle Three: Patience ? ?to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience,? Ephesians 4: 1b- 2a

As a Christian writer we need to trust God believing His word would come true. We need to keep on keeping on. We need to accept the fact that it takes time to develop our writing craft.? ?The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but wish patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.? ? 2 Peter 3:9

It is better to have a limited audience and impact lives for Christ than to be a New York Times bestselling author and have no impact or testimony for Christ.

Principle Four: Forgiving Love ? ?to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,? ? Ephesians 4: 1b ? 2.

As a Christian writer, we need to realize Christian love covers a multitude of sins. We should write with a love that loves no matter what. We have all heard it said ?hate the sin, love the sinner.? That is exactly what we must do as writers. After all, as a Christian you are, by grace saved through faith ? it is the gift of God.? Ephesians 2:8-10

In Christ we need to love people from where they are to faith and growth in Christ.

Principle Five: Unity of the Spirit in the Bond Of Peace - ?eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.? ? Ephesians 4:3 English Standard Version

Principal five is the sum of points one through four. All four points equal a bond of peace. We are bearing one another in love. Our writing should share and bring people to Christ, not drive them from Christ. ?There is one body and one Spirit?just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call?one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.? ? Ephesians 4:4-6 (English Standard Version).

We need to realize it is not a geographical or a denominational thing; it is a Jesus and a God thing.

Encourage your friends, keep reading and write.

Car drives several miles with dog trapped by axle

(AP) ? South Florida firefighters came to the rescue of a dog that traveled 5 miles while trapped under the hood of a car.

The Broward Sheriff's Office says firefighters were called Thursday afternoon to Dania Beach to free the dog. The animal had been trapped between the car's axle and steering mechanism.

A sheriff's office spokesman says the dog suffered no injuries, even though it had been driven roughly 5 miles from Hallandale Beach.

It wasn't immediately clear how the dog became trapped.

Experts from MSU to provide insight on cherry, apple production

CLARKSVILLE, Mich.? ? The MSU Clarksville Research Center will host its annual Cherry Variety and High-Tech Research Showcase July 9. The event features MSU AgBioResearch scientists and MSU Extension specialists discussing fruit topics such as new varieties, market opportunities, training and hedgerow systems, and various ways to use technology in orchard management.

Phil Schwallier, MSU Extension fruit educator, will lead a mini-workshop on apple thinning in the morning. Thinning is a process that helps to improve the quality of the fruit by reducing the crop load.?

?Growers will learn about various apple thinning strategies as well as tree hedging,? Schwallier said.

Educational sessions will begin at 1 p.m.

Jim Flore, MSU AgBioResearch scientist and professor of horticulture, will lead a session on bloom delay using solid set canopy delivery spray systems. They?re generally used to spread pesticide treatments effectively and evenly on trees. Flore has conducted research that shows that using these systems to spray water on the buds can delay bloom 10 to 14 days on average.

?Growers can also use technology out in the orchards to collect data on temperature and humidity, and then the systems can be programmed to mist the cherries at the most effective times,? said Flore, adding that this type of management could be especially valuable for high-density apple and cherry varieties.

In light of last year?s devastating late frost, techniques like this could be invaluable for crop protection in the future.

?If we had had systems like this last year, we might have been able to save some of the lost crop,? he said. ?It?s important for growers who have the solid set systems to know that these options are available to them at little extra cost.?

Nikki Rothwell, center coordinator for the MSU Northwest Michigan Horticultural Research Center in Traverse City, will bring early cherry varieties to the showcase. She will be joined by MSU professor of horticulture Greg Lang and fruit growers Wallace Heuser and Wanda Heuser Gale.

?Growers will have an opportunity to see, taste and learn about these new cherry varieties that we?ve been testing,? Rothwell said. ?Wallace and Wanda are growers that we collaborate with on these new varieties, and their contribution has been invaluable. Their nursery work is giving us vital information on how to make new varieties commercially viable.?

MSU has also been collaborating Cornell University associate chair of department of horticulture Susan Brown (recently named associate director of the New York Agricultural Experiment Station), on various subjects.?

?In working toward developing new sweet cherry varieties, we want to give growers the option to try fresh market cherry production as well,? Rothwell said. ?Michigan has historically been a production cherry state, which is definitely the backbone of our industry. Now we want to give those growers who are interested the chance to grow fresh market cherries. We have many large cities in and close to Michigan, so the market opportunity is definitely there.?

Other topics that will be discussed at the event include:

  • Spotted-wing drosophila management.
  • High efficiency sweet cherry training systems.
  • Sweet cherry covering systems (Cravo, VOEN, Haygrove, ? ? bird netting).
  • Tart cherry hedgerow systems for over-the-row ? ? harvesters.

The event will also feature an orchard technologies question-and-answer session.

Presenters include Amy Iezzoni, professor of horticulture and cherry breeder; Amy Irish Brown, MSU Extension educator; Larry Gut, professor of entomology; Bill Shane, senior MSU Extension specialist; and Ron Perry, professor of horticulture.

?With all the new growing systems and technologies that MSU has worked on, I think growers in our state are going to have a lot more opportunities to improve their current production, try new techniques and break into new markets,? Rothwell said.

The showcase is sponsored by MSU Extension, Summit Tree Sales and International Plant Management. For more information, call 1-800-424-2765.? There is no registration fee, and a complimentary lunch will be served.
