2012 NFL Season: Surprise Teams & Disappointment Teams

The 49ers were the major surprise team in the NFL in 2011.

We are coming into the NFL forecasting season where every pro football media person is required, by law, to offer his or her 2012 season prediction for each team. But they always get it wrong! Why? Because they fail to take into account surprise and disappointment teams.

First, some definitions:

I'll define a successful NFL season as one in which a team wins ten games or more. In the ten-year, 32-team era (2002 thru 2011), 37 teams have ended the regular season with a record of 10-6. 32 of them made the playoffs and the five that missed were in the hunt to the last game. Only one team with more than ten wins failed to get into the post season party.

An unsuccessful season is one in which a team loses ten games or more. Any fan that has suffered through a ten-loss season will agree.

A surprise team goes from a ten-or-more loss season to ten-or-more wins in the next season. A disappointment team is just the opposite, going from winning ten or more, to winning six or fewer the next season.

Next, some stats:

Using 1989 as a base year ('88 was a strike year), we get 22 seasons to look at. There has been an average of 2.05 surprise teams and 1.87 disappointment teams per year during that time.

In the 32-team era, with more teams and greater parity, there has been an average of 2.67 surprise teams and 2.56 disappointment teams per year.

Wi-Fi Media lets your Nexus 7 play movies on any screen via HTC's Media Link HD (hands-on video)

We're rather big fans of the Nexus 7 here at Engadget HQ -- it's just hard not to like a $200 tablet with a Tegra 3 SoC and 7-inch glass-bonded IPS display running pure Jelly Bean. Of the few missing features, there's one we're bemoaning more than the lack of rear camera, and that's the absence of any kind of HDMI or MHL video output. So far, watching movies with the Nexus 7's been relegated to using a Nexus Q and streaming content from Google Play or YouTube.

Enter Wi-Fi Media, an app available for free on Google Play that lets most Android devices like the Nexus 7 play movies, music and stills on any screen via any Cavium PureVu-compatible streamer, such as HTC's $90 Media Link HD. We tested Wi-Fi Media with our Nexus 7 and Media Link HD and found it to work pretty much as advertised except for some caveats. First the app doesn't mirror your screen -- you're limited to playing content stored on the tablet or on the network via DLNA, which means no YouTube, Netflix or games. Second, the app doesn't handle some common file types -- like AVI, for example.

While it supports watching movies, listening to music and looking at pictures, keep in mind that Wi-Fi Media is not a particularly polished app. In addition to playing local and remote DLNA content, you're able to login to Facebook and Picasa and stream images directly from these accounts, but that's pretty much it in terms of functionality. There's also no way to configure the Media Link HD, so you'll need a sanctioned HTC handset to setup the multimedia streamer before using it with a Nexus 7. Want to know more? Update: Since there's some confusion in the comments, we'd like to clarify that the Media Link HD is not a DLNA device. It normally only works with select HTC phones like the One X, One S and EVO 4G LTE. WiFi-Media's primary purpose is to connect with a Media Link HD -- the app also just happens to support DLNA.

Ghana Life: Men's Hair Styles

In the past, men have pretended that they were not much concerned about their appearance, and this was particularly emphasised when it came to hair. However, in an age when the differentiation between the genders becomes increasingly blurred, men have followed their sisters into all manner of personal adornment. In Ghana, over the second half of the twentieth century, this trend threatened to lessen the dominance of natural tonsorial styles and persuaded some to find self-expression in the full range of more manipulative means of hair control.

During most of the period under review, men in Ghana?s cities and towns continued to be much more at ease with their natural hair than their womenfolk. Most men were content to pay a more-or-less regular visit to the barber to maintain the length of their hair within prescribed limits and, in the interim, to rely on a broad-toothed comb of traditional design to maintain a minimal degree of order. Some professionals, it is true, maintained a parting in an aped version of the style of the former colonial masters, but this was perhaps the limit of what was then achieved by purely tonsorial attention. The days of shaved heads, and especially of patterned shaving lay further in the future.

The first sign of the feminisation of men?s hair styles came with what was known as Rasta. This was the adoption of plaiting, with or without extensions of synthetic fibres, to produce long hanging plaits, rats? tails, dreadlocks or more properly just ?locks.? Associated with the Rastafarian religion, mostly practised along the coast in the south, Rasta originally came to Ghana from Jamaica. Rasta hairstyles seem to vary widely in quality, from the almost totally unkempt to freshly re-plaited elaborate creations that would grace a female head. However, the general recollection of the last century is that Ghanaian Rastas were relatively few in number. They may be more common today as a Rastafarian Council was founded in Ghana in 2009.

When discussing men?s hairstyles it is impossible to neglect the topic of balding, hair loss that afflicts many men and often in their prime. Through most of the twentieth century Ghanaian men took baldness in their stride with jokes about ?TVs? and ?motorways? depending on the shape of the bald patch. In general, they left the tufts of remaining hair untouched except for the routine attention of a barber administering standard ?short-back-and-sides.? The fashion of ?some-off, all-off,? which has swept across the Western world in recent years, was almost unseen in Ghana before the end of the millennium.

With advances in chemical processing, and in particular with the introduction of less-burning and painful potions, some young men are bravely submitting themselves to the periodical ordeal of permanent waving, or permanent straightening as it should be called in Africa. However, this is a development of the new millennium and was little in evidence in the twentieth century. Overall, it must be said that Ghanaian men proved themselves to be much more conservative than their sisters in accepting change and becoming followers of fashion. This applied to hair styling as much as to clothing. Whether they were wisely content to stick with what they considered to be most cost-effective, or were stubbornly denying themselves full self-expression, is a matter of personal opinion.
