Eat to Compete!: Added Sugars: The Scary Truth!

Halloween is that time of year when kids rejoice, parents groan and dentists cringe. The holiday by tradition is filled with sugar-glazed donuts, gooey caramel apples and chewy candies of all sorts. It is a good thing Halloween comes only once a year, as regular intake of these high-sugar foods wreaks havoc on our health in more ways than one. A study assessing the U.S. NHANES 2007-2008 data reported that added sugars provided 14.6% of total energy intake in individuals' diets with the main contributors being soda and energy/sports drinks, grain-based desserts, fruit drinks, dairy desserts and candy. The USDA recommends no more than 32gm (or 8 tsp) of added sugars/day per 2,000 Kcal of intake; this is equivalent to 6% of calories from added sugars.

So after the costumes are put away and the candy is eaten (or thrown away), what can you do on a daily basis to make sure your intake of added sugars isn't sky-high? First, lets review the facts:
  • Added sugars are sugars and syrups that are added to foods or beverages during processing or preparation
  • Added sugars does not include naturally occurring sugars such as those that occur in milk and fruits.
  • While the body does not metabolize added vs. natural sugars differently, sources of natural sugars often contain other nutrients such as fiber or vitamins and minerals. These other nutrients benefit our overall level of health and also affect the total metabolism of the food.
  • Foods that contain added sugars include: soft drinks, candy, cakes, cookies, pies, fruit drinks (fruitades, fruit punch, Tang), milk-based desserts and products (ice cream, sweetened yogurt and sweetened milk), grain products (sweet rolls, cinnamon toast, donuts, Pop-Tarts, sweetened cereals, Toaster Strudels, etc.). Clearly this is not an all-inclusive list!
If you are confident the product contains only added sugars, you can calculate the number of teaspoons of sugar in that food or drink. For every 4 grams of sugar on?a food label (look at total carbohydrate)?that is equal to 1 teaspoon of sugar in the food. Here are a few examples:
  • One 12 fl. oz. can of regular soda = 40 grams sugar = 10 tsp sugar
  • 1 jelly-filled donut = 36 grams sugar = 9 tsp sugar
  • One 2 oz. (regular-sized) Snickers candy bar = 34 grams sugar = 8.5 tsp sugar
  • 1 cup chocolate ice cream = 38 grams sugar = 9.5 tsp
The problem with targeting added sugars in our diet is that finding the added sugars is sometimes not as obvious. Many products that we believe to contain only natural sugars (such as, perhaps, yogurt) actually contain added sugars as well.?With these foods,?looking at the food label doesn't help. While the label lists "sugars", this doesn't always mean added sugars if there are natural sugars present and so often confuses consumers.

So, be an added sugar detective! The next time you are looking at a product, find the ingredient list. If any of?these ingredients are listed, the product contains added sugars:
-brown sugar?????????????????????-invert sugar??????????????????-anhydrous dextrose
-corn sweetener????????????????-lactose????????????????????????? -confectioners powdered sugar
-corn syrup????????????????????????-maltose????????????????????????-corn syrup solids
-dextrose???????????????????????????-malt syrup??????????????????? -maple syrup
-fructose??????????????????????????? -molasses?????????????????????-nectars
-fruit juice concentrates?????-raw sugar???????????????????? -white granulated sugar
-glucose???????????????????????????? -sucrose??????????????????????? -cane juice, cane sugar
-high-fructose corn syrup?? -sugar
-honey??????????????????????????????? -syrup

Remember, too, that ingredients are listed by weight. So if an added sugar is one of the first few ingredients, the product is likely high in added sugar.

So what are some good ways to?reduce added sugars in your diet? Come back next week to find out!

Be Extraordinary,

BREAKING: Dallas County OKs health insurance for domestic partners

Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins

The gay and straight domestic partners of Dallas County employees will soon be eligible for a $300 monthly subsidy from the county to help pay for health insurance.

The County Commissioners Court voted 3-2 along party lines Tuesday morning to offer the subsidy to employees who have same- or opposite-sex domestic partners who do not have insurance through other means.?The subsidy will be equal to the amount the county contributes to an employee?s health insurance.

County Judge Clay Jenkins, and Commissioners Dr. Elba Garcia and John Wiley Price, who comprise the court?s Democratic majority, voted in favor of offering the domestic partner subsidy. Republican Commissioners Mike Cantrell and Maurine Dickey voted against it.

Jenkins and Garcia, who spearheaded the initiative, had initially hoped to offer domestic partner benefits through the Public Employee Benefits Cooperative, a multi-county partner agency, but other members ? including Denton and Tarrant counties ? would not allow it.

Those who enroll in Dallas County?s subsidy program will have to sign a domestic partner affidavit, and provide two forms of proof that they have lived together for six months, such as a lease agreement or joint bank accounts. Other requirements mandate that partners must be at least 18 and not be married.

The official projected cost is under $100,000 per year ? though based on the experiences of other government entities including Parkland hospital, the actual price tag is likely to be only a fraction of that amount.

Under the plan, Dallas County becomes the third county in Texas to offer DP benefits after Travis County and El Paso County. The city of Dallas has offered domestic partner benefits since 2004.

PST: Concern in Seattle over Eddie's hamstring

All eyes and ears around the rave green crowd will be focused on Eddie Johnson?s hamstring today.

The Seattle Sounders leading scorer (14 goals) came off the field in the first half last night with a strained hamstring. Team officials will have a better diagnosis and prognosis following an MRI today. (Whether they will share it with us with 100 percent transparency, who knows?)

Here?s what Johnson said about it last night via the Seattle Times:

I made a couple long runs early in the game and my hammy kind of tightened up on me. My game is (made up) of making hard runs behind the back four, and there was a play where I tried to set the defender up like I was going to come for the ball and check away, and I felt a big cramp in my hamstring.

?I know what that feeling feels like. I was smart. I came out. I didn?t try to force it, but there?s definitely something there. If I had played, I?d have been restricted. The smart thing was for me to do what?s best for the team and come out. We?ll get an MRI on Monday and see what?s going on.?

This will not be devastating news for Seattle, but it?s certainly bad news. The West field is tough. Real Salt Lake is up first, and then a date with the Galaxy in all likelihood.

Fredy Montero is playing well, so the goal-scoring cupboard is hardly bare. But no one who would replace Johnson as the Sounders most advanced striker comes close to offering what the U.S. international and MLS All-Star does, solidly-timed runs into the penalty area and the athletic ability to deliver once he accesses those areas.

There is also concern about center back Jeff Parke, who also left last night?s match, although there is more cover there.

No more tears from tears

Commercial medical tapes on the market today are great at keeping medical devices attached to the skin, but often can do damage?such as skin tissue tearing?once it's time to remove them.

A research team from Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) has invented a quick-release tape that has the strong adhesion properties of commercial medical tape, but without the ouch factor upon removal.

The team was led by Jeffrey Karp, PhD, BWH Division of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Medicine, senior study author in collaboration with The Institute for Pediatric Innovation which defined the need and requirements for a new neonatal adhesive based on national surveys of neonatal clinicians.

The study detailing the tape design will be electronically published on October 29, 2012 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The research was conducted in collaboration with Robert Langer, PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The tape which achieves strong adhesion when securing medical devices to skin, but could also easily peel off safely, utilizes a three-layer design approach that sets a new paradigm for quick-release medical tapes.

"Current adhesive tapes that contain backing and adhesive layers are tailored to fracture at the adhesive-skin interface. With adults the adhesive fails leaving small remnants of adhesive on the skin while with fragile neonate skin, the fracture is more likely to occur in the skin causing significant damage," said Karp. "Our approach transitions the fracture zone away from the skin to the adhesive-backing interface thus completely preventing any harm during removal."

The approach incorporates an anisotropic adhesive interface between the backing and adhesive layers. The anisotropic properties of this middle layer means that it has different physical properties dependent on direction. For instance, take wood, which is stronger along the grain than across it.

The researchers employed laser etching and a release liner to create the anisotropic interface resulting in a medical tape with high shear strength (for strong adhesion) and low peel force (for safe, quick removal). Once the backing is peeled off, any remaining adhesive left on the skin can safely be rolled off with a finger using a "push and roll" technique.

"This is one of the biggest problems faced in the neonate units, where the patients are helpless and repeatedly wrapped in medical tapes designed for adult skin," said Bryan Laulicht, PhD, BWH Division of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Medicine, lead study author.

There are more than 1.5 million injuries each year in the United States caused by medical tape removal. Such injuries in babies and the elderly?populations with fragile skin?can range from skin irritation to permanent scarring.

EU considers sending 200 troops to train Mali army

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union is considering sending about 200 troops to train Mali's army to retake the Islamist-held north, but is not willing to deploy them in battle, EU officials said on Tuesday.

Fears are growing in Europe that the African country could turn into a platform for terrorist attacks, after Islamist fighters seized two-thirds of its territory earlier this year.

"There is a willingness among member states to put boots on the ground - but only on the parade ground," one of the EU officials said. "I haven't heard from member states a willingness to put people in the field."

The EU discussions are among international efforts to mobilize against the militants in northern Mali, which has attracted Islamists, criminal networks and Al Qaeda-linked gunmen.

The militants are recruiting hundreds of locals, including children, and a trickle of foreign fighters. The EU officials said the region was becoming a haven for traffickers - of people, drugs and cigarettes - and that this money was financing terrorists.

EU leaders said at a summit on October 19 that the Mali crisis was an "immediate threat" to Europe. Foreign ministers had called four days earlier for the EU diplomatic service to draw up a plan to help Mali's military.

Three such plans have been under consideration, said an EU official: help only with training; training plus reform of the army's structure; or both of these, plus mentoring.

The third scenario envisaged sending EU troops into combat with Malian troops. But member states are not willing to risk sending their troops into combat, said the official.

LOW MORALE, CORRUPTION

Instead, EU member states had decided that a combination of training and restructuring was the best option. Roughly 200 trainers, protected by a security force of a similar size, might be involved, said another EU official.

The Malian army had 6,000 or 7,000 troops, which were mostly badly equipped and poorly trained, and suffered from low morale, corruption and nepotism, said the official, adding: "It needs civilian control and lines of command to be made clear."

France, the region's former colonial power, drafted an October 12 U.N. Security Council resolution asking African states and the United Nations for a Mali military intervention plan led by the West African ECOWAS bloc within 45 days.

ECOWAS has intervened militarily in past African conflicts, including the wars in Liberia and Sierra Leone.

The European Union is considering help for ECOWAS with military planning and logistics, and an EU planner was already in Bamako helping on this, one of the EU officials said.

The EU diplomatic service plans to report on its plan for Mali at the next EU foreign ministers' meeting, scheduled for November 19. After that, planning could take months, or as much as a year, said one of the officials.

"We don't overestimate the speed at which we can move," he said.

Six French hostages are being held by the Islamists. President Francois Hollande is said to believe there is a risk that al Qaeda's North African arm, AQIM, is cementing its base in the West African state, creating a launch pad for an attack on French soil.

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said in October: "If the north collapses, if terrorist training camps spring up... it will also threaten us in Europe.

Shelling out Fundamentals ? What Are Your Investment decision

Retirement may be a long way off of for you ? or it will be right around the corner. No matter how near or far it is, you?ve absolutely reached start saving because of it now. Even so, saving for retirement isn?t what it used to be using the increase in living cost and the fluctuations of sociable security. You need to invest on your retirement, as opposed to saving for this!

First, it is possible to invest in shares, bonds, good funds, cd?s, and money market place accounts. You don?t need to to state for you to anybody how the returns in these purchases are to be used with regard to retirement. Just merely let your income grow overtime, and when selected investments get to their adulthood, reinvest them and continue to let your income grow.

You may also open a good Individual Retirement Account (IRA). IRA?s are quite popular because the financial resources are not taxed until you take away the resources. You may also be able to deduct your own IRA contributions through the taxes that you just owe. A great IRA can be exposed at most banks. A ROTH IRA is really a newer form of retirement account. With a Roth, you spend taxes on the money that you will be investing in your, but when you cash out, no national taxes are generally owed. Roth IRA?s can even be opened at a financial institution.

Another popular type of retirement living account is the 401(k). 401(k?s) are typically provided through organisations, but you might be able to open any 401(k) on your own. You should speak with a financial planner or even accountant that will help you with this. The particular Keogh plan is another type of IRA that is suited to self employed individuals. Self-employed small business owners can be interested in Simplified Employee Pension plan Plans (SEP). This can be another type of Keogh prepare that people generally find simpler to administer than a regular Keogh plan.

Whichever retirement investment you select, just make sure you ultimately choose one! Yet again, do not be determined by social safety, company retirement plans, as well as inheritance that may or may not come through! Take care of your financial potential by investing in it today.

Let?s start by examining the IRA Rollover plan offered by your company. Not so long ago, these plans had been quite sound. However, following the Enron upset and many types of that followed, individuals aren?t as safe in their company retirement strategies anymore. When you purchase not to fund your company?s retirement prepare, you do have other options related on financial planning.

Nearly 100 wounded in deadly Nigeria suicide attack

A suicide bomber drove a vehicle packed with explosives into a Catholic church in northern Nigeria on Sunday, killing at least five people, wounding nearly 100 and triggering reprisal attacks that killed at least two more, officials said.

The bomber drove a jeep right inside the packed St Rita's church, in the Malali area of Kaduna, a volatile ethnically and religiously mixed city, in the morning.

"I cannot tell you how many casualties, but there were many. The heavy explosion also damaged so many buildings around the area," said survivor Linus Lighthouse, saying he thought there had been two explosions in different parts of the church.

Slaughtered 'one by one': 25 slain at Nigeria college

Other witnesses and the police said there had just been one bomber however.

A spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Kaduna said that five people had been confirmed killed, while 98 people were receiving treatment for wounds at two local hospitals.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility but Islamist sect Boko Haram has claimed similar attacks in the past and has attacked several churches with bombs and guns since it intensified its campaign against Christians in the past year.

One wall of the church was blasted open and scorched black, with debris lying around. Police later moved in and cordoned the area off.

Reprisals
Shortly after the blast, angry Christian youths took to the streets armed with sticks and knives. A Reuters reporter saw two bodies on the roadside lying in pools of blood.

"We killed them and we'll do more," shouted a youth, with blood on his shirt, before police chased him and his cohorts away. Police set up roadblocks and patrols across town in an effort to prevent the violence spreading.

Another witness, Daniel Kazah, a member of the Catholic cadets in the church, said he had seen three bodies on the bloodied church floor after the bomb. "But still others were taken to the mortuary," he said.

An emergency worker on the scene, who had helped move casualties but was not authorized to give his name, estimated the total number of dead and wounded at around 30.

Nigeria church attack kills 16

A spokesman for St Gerard's Catholic hospital, Sunday John, said the hospital was treating 14 wounded but had not received any dead.

Islamist sect Boko Haram is fighting to try to create an Islamic state in Nigeria, whose 160 million people are split roughly evenly between Christians and Muslims.

Some of the attacks on churches have seemed calculated to stir sectarian tensions along Nigeria's volatile middle belt, where its largely Christian south and mostly Muslim north meet.

Kaduna lies along that fault line, and many of its neighborhoods are mixed.

A bomb in a church in Kaduna state in June triggered a week of sectarian violence that killed at least 90 people.

Reports: Rocker Gary Glitter arrested in Savile child sex case

LONDON (AP) ? Police investigating child sex abuse allegations against the late BBC television host Jimmy Savile arrested former glam rock star and convicted sex offender Gary Glitter on Sunday, British media reported, raising further questions about whether Savile was at the center of a broader pedophile ring.

Police would not directly identify the suspect arrested Sunday, but media including the BBC and Press Association reported he was the 68-year-old Glitter.

The musician, whose real name is Paul Gadd, made it big with the crowd-pleasing hit "Rock & Roll (Part 2)," a mostly instrumental anthem that has been a staple at American sporting events, thanks to its catchy "hey" chorus. But he fell into disgrace after being convicted on child abuse charges in Vietnam.

Sunday's arrest was the first in a widening scandal over Savile's alleged sex crimes. Hundreds of potential victims have come forward since police began the investigation into sex abuse allegations against Savile, a much-loved children's TV presenter and disc jockey who died at the age of 84 last year.

Most have alleged abuse by Savile, but some said they were abused by Savile and others. Most claimed they were assaulted in their early teens.

The scandal has raised questions about whether the BBC, the publicly funded and trusted broadcaster, had ignored crimes it suspected over several decades. Its executives have apologized and vowed to uncover the true scale of the alleged abuse.

"The BBC's reputation is on the line," Chris Patten, the chairman of the BBC Trust, wrote in The Mail on Sunday newspaper. "The BBC risks squandering public trust because one of its stars over three decades was apparently a sexual criminal ... and because others ? BBC employees and hangers-on ? may also have been involved."

On Sunday, the BBC and Sky News showed footage of Glitter, who wore a hat, a dark coat and sunglasses, being taken from his home by officers and driven away.

Police would not directly identify the suspect, but when asked about Glitter a spokesman said the force arrested a man in his 60s early Sunday morning in London on suspicion of sexual offenses in connection with the Savile probe. He remains in custody in a London police station, police said. British police do not generally identify suspects under arrest by name until they are charged.

Glitter, known for his shiny jumpsuits and bouffant wigs, was jailed in Britain in 1999 for possessing child pornography, and convicted in 2006 in Vietnam of committing "obscene acts with children" ? offenses involving girls aged 10 and 11. He was deported back to Britain in 2008.

In 2006, the NFL advised its football teams not to use the Glitter version of "Rock and Roll (Part 2)" at games.

One witness recently told a BBC-TV show that she once saw Glitter having sex with a schoolgirl in Savile's dressing room at the broadcaster's TV center in the 1970s. Glitter has denied the allegations.

Police have said that though the majority of cases it is investigating relate to Savile alone, some involve the entertainer and other unidentified suspects. In addition, some potential victims who reported abuse by Savile also told police about separate allegations against unidentified men that did not involve the BBC host.

The scandal has horrified Britain with revelations that Savile, the longtime host of the popular BBC shows "Top of the Pops" and "Jim'll Fix It," allegedly cajoled and coerced vulnerable teens into having sex with him in his car, his camper van, and even in dingy dressing rooms on BBC premises.

The BBC has set up an independent inquiry into the corporation's culture and practices in the years Savile worked there. It also launched a separate inquiry into whether its journalists dropped an investigation into the allegations.

But the scandal continues to put the broadcaster under pressure, and it seems likely that more people ? either outside or inside the corporation ? could be implicated.

"It could be the beginning of other high-profile arrests," Roy Greenslade, a journalism professor at London's City University, said in an interview with The Associated Press on Sunday.

Max Clifford, a prominent public relations guru, claimed that dozens of celebrities from the 1960s and 1970s have approached him to express fear that they could be drawn into to the scandal and criticized for their hedonistic behavior in the past.

Greenslade said that while Glitter's arrest must be a huge concern to the BBC, it is too early to say that the broadcaster's reputation is in crisis.

"If any BBC employee is shown to be involved, then there would be a nosedive in public trust," he said. "But nothing at the moment has been proven."

The Combs Team Blog: Alamo Real Estate: West Side Vs. Roundhill

Over the years the most frequently asked question by my readers is simply, ?Which is better, West Side or Roundhill? ? Since I believe they are both exceptionally nice, I am not going to give a direct answer. In my mind it probably depends on whether or not you are a golfer, but I know people are really asking me about investment value. My answer to this is that there probably isn?t any real difference although I am willing to acknowledge that others may see it differently.

This month I thought I would lay out some comparative data and give my readers the opportunity to evaluate the differences on their own. To make the comparison fair, I only included single family homes and eliminated condos which skew the numbers lower for the West Side. The attached chart displays West Side vs. Roundhill in a like time frame comparison from Jan. 1-Nov.16 for the years 2010 and 2011.

What jumps out immediately is that on average the homes selling in Roundhill are significantly larger than on the West side. In this calendar year about 19% larger and as is typical for our area, larger homes sell at a higher average and median price but at a lower price when dollars per square foot are compared. This year the West Side is selling at $394 per square foot versus $351 in Roundhill. That?s about about an 11% price advantage in favor of the West Side.

When you compare average price, the nod goes to Roundhill. It is selling this year at an average price of $1,241,000 compared to $1,152,627 for the West Side for about a 7% difference. Roundhill also wins on median price of $1,095,000 compared to the West Side?s $1,006,000 for about an 8% difference. Given the innate differences between the homes sold in the two neighborhoods, a rational person could make an argument for either one being the better of the two.

A startling fact that jumps off the page is that the size of homes selling in each of these neighborhoods is dropping by 9% and 11% respectively from a year ago. This may be the most significant finding in the chart. Buyers are choosing smaller homes in both neighborhoods compared to 2010. This begs the question about the demographic shift taking place in our country and our Alamo market place. Are downsizing ?Baby Boomers? driving our market toward smaller home purchases? They have driven every thing else since they hit their 20s more that 40 years ago. The first year of the massive Baby Boom retirement is 2011 and it will extend another 13 years. Another thought is about the rising prices for energy and water. Are people finding it too expensive to maintain larger homes in this ?New Economy? and opting for smaller foot prints and lower tax bases, or are loans simply not available to support larger home purchases?

Unit sales figures appear to support this smaller is better notion. West Side unit sales are up by 16% this year and Roundhill unit sales are down by 26%. This difference does not appear to be driven by lack of inventory. There is available inventory in both locations. Fourteen homes are currently for sale in Roundhill and 24 homes are available on the West Side. Time on market has also lengthened in both locations with Roundhill homes taking 38% longer to sell this year than during the same time frame last year. Roundhill is now running about even with the West Side of Alamo in time to sell...about 80 days for each location.

Three of the seven pending sales (43%) in West Side Alamo are subject to lender approval meaning they are either short sales or Bank Owned properties. Two of three pending sales (63%) in Roundhill are also distressed. I don?t think any one would have dreamed that Alamo would be so heavily impacted by this economic down turn. On the bright side we do get closer to the end of this mess with each passing day and perhaps 2012 will be the year this aberration of distressed sales comes to an end. We will see.

Nancy and I want to wish you a very Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year.

(AP) ? An archaeologist says a structure that is believed to be the remains of an ancient Hindu temple has been unearthed on Indonesia's resort island of Bali.

Wayan Swantika of the local archaeology agency says workers digging a drainage basin last week in eastern Denpasar, Bali's capital, at first discovered a large stone about 1 meter (3 feet) underground.

Excavation teams have since uncovered a 57-meter (62-yard) structure that is believed to be the temple's foundation.

The find is still being analyzed, but given the shape and characteristics of the materials used, Swantika says he believes it was built sometime between the 13th and 15th centuries. He added that it is also thought to be the largest ancient temple ever discovered in Bali.

Pandora Shares Fall on Reported Apple Music Talks - Snagg Stuff

October 26, 2012 Admin Deals of the Day

Shares of Pandora Media Inc. snapped downward Thursday after a report said Apple Inc. and major music companies had intensified talks about starting a new music service early next year.

THE SPARK: Bloomberg News reported that Apple and the record labels were in talks about offering a new music service to Apple device users as the growth in song download sales is tapering off. It published a similar report in September.

The latest report came two days after Apple unveiled a new iPad line-up for the holidays, including its smaller, less expensive iPad Mini, but did not announce any new music offering. The lack of the announcement on Tuesday may have contributed to Pandora shares gaining 8 percent that day.

THE BIG PICTURE: Several companies such as Sweden?s Spotify and Rhapsody in the U.S. offer subscription music plans for $10 a month that allow unlimited playback of songs on mobile devices. Subscribers don?t need to pay individually for downloads, but lose access to the music once they stop paying the monthly fee.

Microsoft Corp. even offers such unlimited song selection and playback for free on its new Windows 8 devices, including those on tablets such as its own Surface, which is available in its stores on Friday.

A variety of new digital music entrants have spooked investors in Pandora, which runs a free music streaming service on computers, mobile devices, stereos and car audio systems and is the leading provider of so-called online radio in the U.S.

Pandora?s streaming radio business relies on government-regulated licenses with music companies. To qualify for the mandatory licenses, the company must prevent the listener from being able to pick the exact song or album they want and limit the number of times an artist can be played each hour.

Apple would not need to discuss anything with music labels to start such a service since such licenses are issued through regulations if the playback conditions are met.

Its reported direct talks with the record labels suggest it is seeking a service with more active user involvement along the lines of Spotify, Rhapsody, MOG and others.

Apple spokesman Tom Neumayr declined to comment. Pandora spokeswoman Amanda Livingood also declined to comment.

THE ANALYSIS: Barrington Research analyst James Goss said the market reaction was ?knee jerk? and said Pandora shares were trading in a volatile range due to the ?rumor du jour.?

?All of these various slices of music are all competitive in many ways,? he said. Goss said that Apple?s reported talks do not mean it could find a better way than others to improve its mobile advertising business, especially since other companies including Pandora, Google Inc. and Facebook Inc. are all struggling with the issue as consumer activity on mobile devices increases.
