More men with prostate cancer ?team? wait on treatment -Prostate ...

? Prostate Cancer news ? Jul 30, 2012

Men with low-risk forms of prostate cancer are more likely to opt for so-called active surveillance over surgery or radiation when they have a multidisciplinary team of doctors working with them, according to a new study.

Researchers said that may be because teams with urology, imaging and cancer specialists can provide the most balanced view of the risks and benefits of different options.

Recent studies have suggested that for men who have low-risk cancers, active surveillance - which means bringing the patient back for regular checks but not operating immediately - may be just as effective as going straight to prostate surgery or radiation treatment following a diagnosis)

That approach also means patients often avoid the side effects, such as incontinence and impotence, as well as the hefty price tags of unnecessary treatment. Prostate surgery, for instance, typically runs about $13,000.

"For most older men who have low-risk disease, the treatment is not going to change the outcome that we all think about, which is living the rest of their life without being harmed by prostate cancer,? said Dr. H. Ballentine Carter, a urologist from Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore, who wasn?t involved in the new research.

About 240,000 men in the U.S. will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2012, according to the American Cancer Society. More than half of them will have low-risk cancers, which are slow growing and often don?t affect how long a man will live or cause him serious symptoms.

Still, more than nine in 10 men with prostate cancer opt for treatment including surgery or radiation, researchers noted in the new study, published Monday in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

?Many patients who are diagnosed with cancer are over-diagnosed, which means they?re found to have something that doesn?t really pose a threat to their life,? said Dr. Laurence Klotz, head of urology at the Sunnybrook Research Institute in Toronto.

Up to half of all newly-diagnosed prostate cancer patients are candidates for active surveillance, Klotz, who also didn?t work on the new study, told Reuters Health.

?The multidisciplinary groups tend to enhance the degree to which a balanced view is presented to the patient,? Klotz added.

In contrast, urologists seeing a patient alone may recommend the procedure they know best - prostate surgery - whereas radiologists might push for radiation, researchers said.

For the new study, Dr. Jason Efstathiou from Massachusetts General Hospital and his colleagues analyzed treatment choices made by 701 men with low-risk prostate cancer seen at hospitals in Boston.

About one-third of them worked with multidisciplinary teams of doctors, and 43 percent of those patients ended up opting for active surveillance over immediate surgery or radiation. That compared to 22 percent of the men who saw individual practitioners and decided to go with a more conservative approach.

?There is no doubt that different environments could sway men toward different management decisions,? Efstathiou told Reuters Health.

?A multidisciplinary clinic visit allows the patient to hear multiple views regarding their disease and what could be appropriate management choices. We believe that it allows for greater informed decision-making,? he said.

Researchers said prostate cancer patients should be seen in medical centers that have multidisciplinary teams, if possible. But they can also talk with their doctors individually about less aggressive and immediate treatment options, and seek out second opinions.

?The very first question should be, ?Do I need to get treatment or not??? Carter said. ?Then if they get beyond that point they can discuss treatment options.?

Klotz said about one-third of men who choose active surveillance will end up needing treatment because their cancers progress. But there?s no evidence those men are any more likely to die of the disease than men who get treated right away, he added.

?Instead of pulling the trigger so quickly? men need to understand that for the most part, prostate cancer is simply not an urgent situation,? Carter said.

Rafat Ali and Jason Clampet launch Travel ... - Business Insider

rafat-ali-tbi.jpgIn 2008, Rafat Ali sold his tech media company, PaidContent, to the Guardian for about $12.5 million.

Now he's behind the wheel of a new startup, Skift. This time he has a cofounder, Frommer.com's former Head of Content, Jason Clampet, and the two are disrupting an even bigger industry: travel.

Skift is a travel intelligence media company which will deliver news, data and services to its readers. Ali and Clampet have raised a $500,000 round from many investors Ali used to write about: Chris Ahearn, Luke Beatty, Gordon Crovitz, Craig Forman, Jim Friedlich, Tom Glocer, Vishal Gondal, Jason Hirschhorn, Pater Horan, Alan Meckler, Mohamed Nanabhay, Sanjay Parthasarathy, Amol Sarva and Chris Schroeder. Three more are undisclosed.

"Currently there are old-school travel magazines and data companies that are fumbling and bumbling into the web," Ali says of Skift's opportunity. "Travel is one of the world's largest industries; it's very complex and global."

Skift is launching in two phases. The first is news information; data and services will come later. "News is a good way to build a brand," says Ali. "To scale in terms of revenue, that's where data comes in."

Ali says he's had the idea for Skift for more than a year, but he's been working on it for the past six to eight months. Currently, Skift has four employees. There's a news editor, a junior editor, and the two cofounders. Ali says he'll also be hiring a product head and he'll keep the team small initially -- about five or six people. The Skift team will be moving into a New York coworking space soon.

Here's a blog post Ali and Clampet wrote introducing Skift.

And here's what Skift looks like:

Interview With Michael D. Sellers, Who Produced

Interview With Michael D. Sellers, Who Produced ?Karla? for MovieBank Studios
The following is an interview with Michael D. Sellers, who developed (with the aid of intrepid moviebank studios investors) the controversial film ?Karla? for MovieBank Studios. The film depicts the crimes of the infamous Canadian husband & wife slaying team of Karla Homolka & Paul Bernardo. Its acquittance in Canada was met with howls of objection from Canadian politicians & media outlets.

Q: This is undoubtedly one of the most controversial, wild articles in modern Canadian history, & it is essentially still unfolding. Karla Homolka, who was just brought out from jail a couple of months ago, was still in jail when you began making this film. Did you ever so sense
you were making the film ?too soon??

A: Well, when the conveived of doing a project on Karla Homolka & Paul Bernardo was premier brought to me by director Joel Bender, it was January 2004 & ?Monster? was in the theaters. The murders in that motion picture took spot at about the same time that these do so initially, no, we conveived enough of time had passed. Indeed, now, as the film is being brought out ? the murders themselves are fifteen years in the past. But there
are incomparable views to this subject which have kept it alive in uncommon styles ? Karla?s plea negotiate & resulting brief jail stay, her acquittance this recent summer, the courtroom overturning the post-release restrictions. All of these stuff have kept the tale alive & made it seem like the crimes were committed yesterday. But it?s been fifteen years, & we conveive that is a reasonable, & respectful total of time.

Q: You did explore a fine negotiate about the legal ramifications of saying this story, & were in close communicating with congressmen of the victims? families. Could you speak about that procedure a bit & what the effect was of your discussions?

A: From the beginning, Tim Danson?the attorney who represents the victims? families?said that the families respected our right to make the motion picture & would only contradict it whenever the film incorporated depictions of their daughters which might fairly be construed as either disrespectful or pornographic. Tim characterized pornographic as nakedness or simulated intercourse on screen by the actresses portraying the victims. We never intended to include either of those components in the film, so there was very no problem. When we finished the edit, I took a reflect to Toronto & showed it to Tim, & they concurred that it was not pornographic & they would not contradict the acquittance of the film. Misha Collins & Laura Prepon in ?Karla?

Q: There were articles that you removed numerous scenes at the families? request.

A: We removed 8 frames ? 1/3 of one 2nd ? of a long shot crosswise a room since Tim felt that whenever you played it frame by frame on a DVD you might find out a flash of nakedness which was not detectable when played at normal speed. We concurred to do this. That was the only change. You have to remember ? there had been an ongoing & productive dialogue up to the point wherever we showed the movie, & that dialogue did impact the edit in certain ways?not in the shape of postulates from the family, but just from dialogue & discussion. So there were numerous changes, but not as a result of the screening.

Q: What kind of changes?

A: Well, Tim was capable to provide supplemental background on numerous of the sensitivities of the families, stuff that very were substantial to them,
and we took that into consideration. One exemplar would be the subject of Leslie Mahaffey being locked out of her house, & that playing a role in her becoming accosted by Bernardo. We downplayed that prospect since it?s a sore point for the fellowship & not decisive in any path to our story.

Q: What was the point-of-view from which you needed to present the film?

A: Point of view in this film is interesting, & challenging. On the one hand, it?s Karla?s story. We contact her at the opening as she is about to experience an elongated psychiatric rating in the autumn of 2000, eight years into her 12-year jail term. We watch all of the
events in the past?everything from the earlier scenes with Paul through the crimes & eventually a tiny bit of the trial?from her point of view. But that point of view is repeatedly challenged by the psychiatrist who is interviewing her. He doesn?t ?buy into? her story, but preferably attempts to peel distant the layers of the onion, exposing Karla?s attempts at ?spin?, forcing Karla to recognize stuff that she doesn?t need to acknowledge.

Q: Did your approach to the tale evolve over time?

A: Yes & no. I all of the time felt that it was Karla?s story, not Paul?s. But I think, as we got deeper into it, we began to comprehend the ramifications of this on more levels, & that led to numerous changes.

Q: Such as.?

A: Such as the decisiveness to use the interviews with the psychiatrist as a wraparound. We basically felt that yes, it wants to be Karla?s story, but you need a counterpoint?you cannot let her just say it her path without any counter-argument being presented.
It felt like it would be irresponsible & misleading to not produce a ?dissenting voice? to her story.

Q: What troubles ? logistical, legal, ethical ? did you encounter in commencing production?

A: Logistically, we were shooting Los Angeles for Canada, which is a exchange since generally it?s the else path around. We did find homes which closely matched the genuine homes in St. Catherines, but we had to be careful?too practically panning around with the photographic & palm tree trees
would be visible. And blooad tile roofs, stuff like that. We conveived originally that we would go up & shoot numerous 2nd unit in Canada?but after the filming was total & we had been editing for awhile, it began to seem less substantial since the tale is so practically about this kind of hermetically varnished world in which these 2 folks live. It almost felt like attempt to bring in ?local color? from Canada would
just deceive matters, preferably than enlarge value.

Legally, there were a count of issues. The most substantial one, & the one that impacts the tale the most, is that we might not depict anyone in the Homolka fellowship else than Karla, a convicted felon, & Tammy, who is deceased. That posed troubles but we worked through it, without, I think, compromising the story.

Ethically, it was a subject of constantly remembering, & reminding everybody on the show, that this is not a thriller, this very happened. We felt that this imposed a very strict burden on us to be accurate. No flights of fancy?just attempt to say the fact as we realized it.
And that involves a lot more than the bare facts of the story. The bare facts?this happened, & then this happened, & then this happened?are meaningless unless we are capable to provide insight into the ?why? of these things. Why did Karla let Paul speak her into the
rape of Tammy? Why did she stay with him? Why, when he brought Leslie Mahaffey home, did she join him? Why did she go out on the street & aid him abduct Kristin French? Why did she at last turn on him? The film tries, to the very best of our ability, to deliver meaningful insight into these questions. We felt that, ethically, the film would only have value whenever it did this?that we only had a right to make it whenever we were doing our best to shed airy on these questions.

Q: Among the views that seem to have transfixed the media & the common with this subject are how ordinary, attractive & wholesome Karla Homolka & Paul Bernardo seemed. How did you approach casting these ?couple-next-door? killers?

A: In a way, it would have been practically easier to cast a ?killer couple? who were in numerous path overtly creepy. Finding folks to play that kind of role is relatively easy. But we had to find players who might be convincing?as Paul & Karla were?as ?regular, normal? people, & who might as well be convincing as the killers that they in the finish became. I had recognized Misha Collins from his previous labor & phoned for him to read
for the section ? which he did, by with 100s of others. In the end, he was the hands-down option purely based on the deserve of his audition. Laura Prepon was different story. I do not conveive any of us would have conveived of red-headed Donna from ?That 70?s Show? as the option for Karla ? but her director watched the book & sent it to her, & she liked it & came in to read for it. As shortly as she came in & we talked, then
read a tiny bit, I recognized we had our Karla. She had a tremendous grab of the nature & an power to bring out all sides of Karla.

Q: Some appendages of the Canadian government have phoned for a censor or boycott of the film. Your response?

A: The Canadian government, especially the Ontario government, are viewed by numerous as having dropped the ball in the subject of achieving justice in this situation, & they distinctly have a deeply felt (and politically understandable) need to exhibit proceeded interest & vigilance. I am not a Canadian so I do not very need to commentary on what crosses the course between valid vigilance & intrusive ?big brother?-ness. That?s for Canadians to sort out. But I do comprehend wherever they are coming from. My only genuine complaint is that they made these calls without
having seen the film ? or without even having read any valid reviews of the film. I would note that all of these calls that you are referring to happened earlier any of the reviews came out. Since the premier reviews did seem in August ? there have been no more such calls from government figures, & the families have as well publicly stated that although they do not endorse any motion picture about the crimes, they will not
oppose the acquittance of this one.

Q: You have stated ? to paraphrase ? that this film is not a referendum on Karla?s guilt or innocence, but preferably an exploration of her character.
Could you kindly elaborate?

A: I conveive there might be a inclination in Canada for people, when conceiving Karla, to be overwhelmed by the belief of what she became?Paul?s killer accomplice?and to blank out that this is, indeed, what she became?not what she was when they met. When they met, he was already the Scarborough rapist but she did not recognize that, & she was a high school senior with no history of illegal actions whatsoever. So how did this girl, a high school senior from a responsible, working family, autumn in with Paul, & how & wherefore did she make one decisiveness after different that took her down a very darkish road. We very felt that exploring that journey, preferably than overtly judging Karla, was what the tale was about. Everyone, even killers, have a point of view. They don?t? start out as killers?they become killers. It is this ?becoming? section of it that fascinated me. It seemed to me at the time we were learning & composeing the story, that Karla began from what was for her a ?normal? place, then made once decisiveness after another, every one of which producted a ?new normal?, & which made it easier for the next bad decisiveness to happen. If you appear at it in totality it?s incomprehensible ?but whenever you burst it down into every step, every decisiveness ? then we, the film-makers, have a opportunity to deliver meaningful insight about it. That?s our business ? to deliver meaningful insight. Audiences will estimate KARLA, the film, but I very think they will do so, after seeing it, from a situation of practically bigger realizing of the
factors involved as a result of having seen the movie.

Hilary Swank -- Drops Gloves in Legal Fight Over 'Million Dollar - TMZ

Hilary Swank
Drops Gloves in Legal Fight
Over 'Million $$$ Baby' Face

exclusive

0727_hilary_swank_gettyHilary Swank decided to bow out early in her legal battle against an electronics company in California ... dropping the lawsuit she had filed against them for using her pretty mug without permission.

If you recall, Swank filed a suit against Robert's Home Audio and Video in May, alleging they illegally used an image of her from the film "Million Dollar Baby" on their company website, without consent.
?
The Oscar winner has since filed legal docs in L.A. Superior Court, asking a judge to drop the case. The case was officially dismissed on July 19.

Robert Yates -- the lawyer for the home and audio co -- tells TMZ ... he believes the actress scrapped the suit because her case was weak to begin with and it just wasn't worth the effort, adding "It's a lot of bother for very little potential benefit."

A rep for Hilary had no comment.

Don't Let a Collection Scam Put Your Law Firm Out of Business | The ...

Guest contributor Christopher C. Carr , Esq., MBA describes a debt collection scheme that nearly took him in and what attorneys can learn from his experience.

Wolf in sheep's clothing

Sometimes clients aren't as they appear.

A single fraudulent transaction can easily wipe out the entire bank account of a small firm and expose the firm and members of the firm to lawsuits in the matter of just a few days. ?A few years back I was taken in by a fraud scheme, and suffered what was luckily a much smaller loss, so when another scam came in through my email a year ago, I knew how read the signs.

In this most recent case, I would have been defrauded to the tune of $180,000 by a collection scheme that came in through my email. A supposed British subject hired me to collect $600,000 owed her under a very real looking promissory note from her ex-husband, a West Chester, Pennsylvania resident. I even got her to sign a fee agreement. The background of their relationship and source of the debt is beyond the scope of this article; suffice it to say that their ruse was very detailed and convincing.

These two had a relationship alright, but it wasn?t the one they told me about.

When I contacted him by email threatening suit, the correspondent in the fraud (the supposed ex) hemmed and hawed a bit (to make it look realistic) but ultimately agreed to pay a large installment on the debt. A Fed Ex pack duly arrived a few days later containing a check written on a Nova Scotia bank. I called the bank and verified that he was a customer of the bank but they would not tell me his balance for reasons of privacy.? I then deposited the check in my bank and watched my ?available balance? soar.? The fee letter required me to remit the proceeds less my fee by wire to an account in the UK.? Had I done so, I and my bank would have been left holding the bag for hundreds of thousands. So I waited. ?I ultimately got a notice from my bank that the check had been dishonored upon presentation to the Nova Scotia bank, which took about 10 days from the time of my deposit.

The couple perpetrating the international fraud obviously counted on this ?float? period where I had funds in my account that did not really exist. Clearly their check was written on a foreign bank to try and extend this time as long as possible.

I contacted the local police who took a police report but nothing ever came of it. Although I didn?t suffer any loss in this instance, there would have been little or no insurance coverage for such a loss, had it occurred.

The only traceable elements of this scam typically are:

  • The account (and routing information) into which the proceeds are to be paid
  • The IP address of the defrauder (where the computer or other device is located in the world). It cannot be cloaked and can be checked using a free service available via the internet.

This information can be of use in detecting fraudulent activity as to avoid detection and apprehension these people will rarely be where they say they are.? This should be a dead giveaway.

My advice is to fellow attorneys is to stay on alert when it comes to transferring large sums of money.? Never take anything for granted, and you won?t get taken for granted.

Film Review: Kill Keith (2011) Kill Keith 2011 Movie 1

SYNOPSIS:

Kill Keith: Volume 1. Keith ?Cheggers? Chegwin is a household name and has been at the top of his game for nearly 40 years. He?s an all round entertainer and has lived with us via our TV screens on Swap Shop as kids through to GMTV as parents. He is undoubtedly a national treasure, and for nearly four decades has been much loved by viewers young and old. The year is 2010 and hidden away in a damp dark and blood stain cellar is a stranger, a man, a figure in the dark, someone we?d rather not know. He sits through the small hours torturing himself watching Swap Shop on fast forward over and over again.

REVIEW:

Some ideas aren?t good. They can be too silly, shallow, odd or just don?t make any sense. However, that doesn?t mean that they aren?t entertaining and after all, isn?t that what we?re here for? Not every movie can be a grand and sprawling epic with rich characters that touch our hearts, or poignant and meaningful tales that make us reflect on our place in this world. Really they shouldn?t be. Every once in awhile, what we need is something that asks so little of us that all we can do in return is laugh now and again.

Film Review: Kill Keith (2011) Kill Keith 2011 Movie 8

Danny has a new job working for a television studio and has aspirations of earning his way to the top and it doesn?t hurt that he gets to work with Dawn, one of the star anchors he?s in love with. Dawn?s co-anchor, the arrogant Cliff is leaving the show and the job could fall to several other members of the cast, but when they start getting killed one by one, everyone soon discovers that there?s a serial killer on the loose.

Film Review: Kill Keith (2011) Kill Keith 2011 Movie 6

Film Review: Kill Keith (2011) Kill Keith 2011 Movie 7

While I don?t want to say that ?Kill Keith? is a bad movie I?m not willing to call it good either. There?s an obvious attempt at being a satirical farce that is trying to poke fun at both other movies specifically or at the genre in general but has less commitment to that cause than the ?Scary Movie? series. For starters, the title is a takeoff of ?Kill Bill? and while the serial killer does have a ?Death List Five? of sorts that?s where any similarity ends. The yellow jumper that?s on the cover doesn?t even make an appearance.

Film Review: Kill Keith (2011) Kill Keith 2011 Movie 3

Film Review: Kill Keith (2011) Kill Keith 2011 Movie 5

Beyond that there?s an apparent influence by horror and other popular movies; the dingy basement of the killer is littered with tools of the deranged and filmed as many a terrifying place have been depicted, even the characters are drawn with broad strokes of personality traits in order to elicit a direct emotional response so you question who the killer is. The question, however, isn?t that hard. Danny often has aside segments where we are treated to how he?s imagining himself in a certain situation, turning a dash for a missing script page into a war zone battle for instance, quickly become non sequiturs and lose all purpose and humor. The plot is little more than the vehicle to transport between the next gag, joke or imaginary segment and does next to nothing to tie anything together. Even as the movie uselessly limps towards the ending, that conveniently takes place on Halloween,

All of that being said there is still some glimmer of worth in ?Kill Keith,? so long as you aren?t looking for more than a glimmer. Not all of the jokes are bad, in fact there?s a pretty good sense of humor throughout, especially if you already enjoy British humor. Even some of Danny?s imaginary episodes are funny even if they are meaningless and contrived. Amidst all the serial killing is an awkward and sappy love story so the plot isn?t exactly one dimensional, but the characters and situations they find themselves in are often so hammy that they force you to not take them seriously and can actually make you laugh. The laughs may make you feel a little chagrined and kind of dirty but they are laughs nonetheless. Plus the ending is a heartwarming twist that?s cute enough to not make you go on a rage fueled rampage. Unless of course, cute is your button for that sort of thing.

Film Review: Kill Keith (2011) Kill Keith 2011 Movie 2

So yes, ?Kill Keith? isn?t a good movie and it isn?t a movie that?s so bad it?s good but it certainly doesn?t qualify as horrible. You may not want to seek this one out but if you happen to see it you might not want to be sober when you watch it and you probably shouldn?t look directly at it while it?s playing; yet you still may just catch a glimpse here and there that might entertain you.

Lodgefield Snap awaiting second hat-trick in the Greyhound Sales @ The Cross 525 ?

The three-year-old black bitch, Lodgefield Snap, is racing in the Greyhound Sales @ The Cross 525 right after achieving a back-to-back. Racing over the 525 yards flat distance on Friday, 27th July are Black Causeway, Chester Lady, Barntick Petal, Bomb Proof and Night Time Hawk.

Hades Rocket?s three-year-old daughter has compromised on success very rarely and has raced at Harold?s Cross predominantly. Her first two races of the career were victories but she failed to set it as a hat-trick by claiming the third in line as a win.

On 23rd May, 2012 she won the 15 Platter Package 525 at Harold?s Cross over 525 yards. The three-year-old took upon every chance for taking the lead and then finally won the race in 29.33 seconds after bursting into speed from the third spot.

She won by the margin of two and a half lengths and set Hondo Black as the runner-up.

Coming at terms with the third position was, Conors Freddy.

The two training sessions on 17th August, 2011 and the other one 28th October, 2011 got the black daughter out of, Lodgefield Dawn, the hat-trick. All the three races were at Harold?s Cross and all of them were over 525 yards.

She won the final leg of the hat-trick on 16th December, 2011 in the Grade A1 Happy Christmas @ The Cross 525 Semi-Final. Leashing out from the first gate, the Traynor trained set into an early pace and led from the first position concluding the race in 29.06 seconds and winning by the margin of two lengths.

She set Kelmar Joe as the runner-up.

Her composure after striking the hat-trick kind of broke down as she failed in the next six races.? She shot back into form on 29th June, 2012 in the Grade A3 Bet With The Tote 525 over 525 yards. The evening?s favourite got hold of the race in 28.86 seconds and defeated the runner-up, Gin Boy, by the margin of six lengths.

Her final victory until yet was in the Pick 6 Jackpot Starts Now 325 on 13th July, 2012 at Harold?s Cross over 324 yards. She led up and rested the race in 17.64 seconds.

A Brief Overview of Surround Sound Systems - IdeaMarketers.com

With the current advances in technology, you can now bring the movie theatre experience right into your living room. More and more people are switching to home theatres because of its convenience and cost-effectiveness. Having a home theatre, however, can ruin the interiors of your room because of the wires and cables coming from the devices. With wireless sound equipment, you can prevent this problem and even enjoy high quality sound.

People who want a more vivid movie experience in their homes have created their own theatres, but these can be costly. Wireless surround sound systems, however, are comparatively economical. This type of speaker can be useful to those who often move speakers from different places. You do not have to worry whether the cable can reach a certain area or not.

Wireless sound systems are easy to install. Read the instruction manual and you can set up the system within an hour or less. Consumers nowadays can choose a wireless home entertainment system they prefer. Choose a device according to the size of your room to get the right sound level. You can adjust the setting of the speaker to obtain the intensity you want. It is easy to tune the settings of the speaker. This can give you a more pleasurable watching experience.

Wireless surround sound systems use radio frequency signals to transmit data wirelessly. A transmitter transfers signals wirelessly to a receiver installed in the TV screen. Many home theatre speakers can work at a range of 100 feet, but some outdoor speakers can provide greater range.

You can replace your wired speakers for a wireless sound system and still get the same quality of sound. With this kind of surround sound equipment, you do not have to worry about hiding wires and paying a specialist to install it. This can be a smart option for movie and music enthusiasts.

If you have a large home theatre room, you can install many surround sound systems to cover the whole area. You can set up each speaker in every corner of the room. You can mount the speaker, or place it on the floor, and other areas of the theatre room.

Consider the receiver of the surround sound equipment. The receiver is the device that links the entire component to produce high quality sound. Wireless sound speakers can create high quality sound similar to wired sound system models.

Some wireless sound systems, however, are not completely wireless. Some speakers are linked to the power source through wires. Back speakers are those that come wireless. You can plug the speaker to the wall or put it in any place that is convenient to you.

A good video projection with good sound systems can give you a similar movie theatre experience. Watch your favourite movies right in the comforts of your own home by buying a wireless surround sound system.

Romney ad with Olympic footage goes dark on YouTube

Olympic-themed political ads are getting yanked from the Internet. Priorities USA Action, a super PAC supporting President Barack Obama, removed a campaign ad from its website Thursday after the International Olympics Committee (IOC) said it infringed copyright laws. And now, an ad from Mitt Romney's campaign featuring images from the Olympic Games is also off the Web.

A Romney campaign ad released earlier this year that includes a brief clip from the 2002 Olympic Games has been set to "private" on the official campaign YouTube page. It is not clear if the new classification of the video is related to an IOC request, but timing suggests it may be the cause.

Romney, who currently is attending the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympic Games in London, was the CEO of the Olympic Organizing Committee when the Winter Games were held in Salt Lake City, Utah in 2002. His leadership of the committee is often credited for "saving" the 2002 Games, which were in financial turmoil when Romney took the helm in 1999.

Sandrine Tonge, a spokeswoman for the IOC, told Yahoo News Thursday that the Committee "does not allow footage of the Olympic Games or an association with the Olympic rings to be used for political purposes," which could prove to be a headache for Republicans who want to highlight Romney's success ten years ago.

A spokeswoman from the Romney campaign did not immediately return a request for comment about the removal of the ad.

MYANMAR: International Media Denied Entry Following Muslim ...

News of Rohingya Muslims being slaughtered in Myanmar prompted human rights groups around the world into action. Among them was the London-based Pakistan Press Club UK, where club official Ansar Burney vowed an investigation of Muslim persecution in Myanmar ? only to be turned down by the Myanmar Embassy in London for a VISA entry.

According to Mizzima News, a media agency specializing in Burma related news and multimedia, a total of 58 coalition civil society groups (led by Refugees International, the Arakan Project and the Equal Rights Trust) have reported a Muslim massacre in the western Arakan State of Myanmar. Together, the coalition groups have verified reports of senseless murders and the rape of Muslims girls. The resulting terror has prompted many into choosing self-imposed house arrest, and without work, most find it difficult to meet even their most basic needs.

In an official statement, the coalition said that ?what started as inter-communal violence has evolved into a large scale state-sponsored violence against the Rohingya.? Myanmar is not allowing any journalists or human rights activists to enter the country and for Burney, this proves that Myanmar has something to hide.

Penn State, And How Nonprofit Boards Will Shape ... - Fast Company

This article is written by a member of our expert contributor community.

To begin with, many of you did plenty. If you?re reading this post, then it?s likely that you?re active in social media. Public attention to recent nonprofit board scandals, as well as robust participation via Twitter, Facebook, and other social media has been influential in the cases of Penn State, University of Virginia, and the Komen Foundation. There were financial and reputational consequences for organizations led by people who made bad decisions.

Beyond these three cases, you are having an exponential impact because two messages are loud and clear: 1) Boards of nonprofit organizations can no longer be secretive about the ways in which they are handling their responsibilities; there will be transparency, and 2) Boards are being held responsible to act with integrity, for the purpose of the mission, in the best interests of the people whom they serve; boards will be held accountable.

For many of us who have served on and worked with boards for over two decades, we eagerly welcome these newly heightened levels of transparency and accountability. For too long, ?old school? funders and board members have shuttered themselves behind closed doors and been complacent about board apathy and dysfunctional practices.

Here?s what you?ve done to alert nonprofit boards that it?s no longer business as usual:

  1. Raised public awareness that the boards of directors of nonprofits--global, national, and regional organizations, including universities and healthcare institutions--have the authority, power, and responsibility to ensure the integrity of the organization in achieving its mission.
  2. Held organizations accountable by asking tough questions, and expressing your dissatisfaction upon learning that board members have neglected their duties, even potentially sitting idly by while children were being abused.
  3. Shifted your financial contributions from one organization to another when you disagreed with a shift in board policies, or even the reckless way in which the board might have made key decisions.

Here?s why it matters that you?ve engaged in this public discussion about boards:

  1. Boards are on notice that if they neglect their duties in putting the mission and integrity of the organization above all, they are likely to be exposed. As a result, boards will no longer be able to stifle dissent and discussion; board members will be more emboldened to ask the questions that need to be asked; and boards will be more conscientious, deliberate, and thoughtful about fulfilling their responsibilities.
  2. More funders and donors will ask questions about how the boards function at their grantee organizations.
  3. Board members, funders, donors, and board consultants will improve boards by focusing on: board composition, leadership, governance practices, structure, process, and most importantly, ethics and fiduciary responsibilities.

Here?s what you can do to further advance the momentum for better boards:

  1. Continue to be attentive to what happens in nonprofit board rooms in the news, among the organizations that your company funds, and where you make contributions.
  2. Continue to engage in the discussions via social media.
  3. Consider joining a nonprofit board yourself. It?s likely that you have professional skills and expertise, as well as perspectives from your personal experience that will be valuable in helping to advance a nonprofit in achieving its mission. Here are factors to consider in terms of your being ready to join a board, choose a board, find a board that fits, and benefit from the experience.

NGOs and nonprofits address issues of poverty, education, renewable natural resources, healthcare, housing, social justice, human rights, jobs, economic development, and arts and culture, among other things. Boards have the ultimate authority to ensure that these organizations use their resources as intended by donors, governments, and other funders to achieve their missions for a better world.

With your attention to governance and nonprofits, you are helping to ensure that boards fulfill their responsibilities in helping to build a better world.

PFT: Browns finally sign rookie Richardson

Test+Pattern

The NFL recently responded to mounting political pressure regarding the outdated blackout rule by punting the hot potato to the teams.

On the surface, there was cause for celebration.? The league now allows teams to reduce their minimum percentage of non-premium tickets from 100 to 85 in order to allow games to be televised in the local market.

The fine print, in a word, sucks.? Each team must use the same percentage for every game, and the percentage must be selected for the full year by August 9.? And if the team does better than expected, the league?s share of each ticket goes from 34 cents on the dollar to 50.

As a result, various teams who would otherwise be tempted to consider the rule have said, ?No thanks,? including the Chargers, Bills, Browns, Colts, and Jaguars.? Only the Buccaneers have to date embraced the new rule.

Now, some of the same politicians who pushed the league to relax the blackout rule are now seeking a relaxation of the relaxation.

Recently, Congressman Brian Higgins (D-N.Y.) and Ohio Senators Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) sent a letter to Commissioner Roger Goodell suggesting that each team receive two waivers per year, to account for games in which ticket sales exceed the selected minimum.

The league has yet to make any changes to the changed blackout rule, but Representative Higgins believe that change eventually will come.

?You look at the changing economic model, the blackout just doesn?t make sense,? Higgins said, via WIVB.? ?I?ll tell you something, you mark my words, in five years there won?t be a blackout rule because the economic model is changing, and continues to change.?

Higgins may be right, but it will happen only if pressure continues to be applied to the league by politicians, fans, and the media.? The fact that the league relaxed the rule proves that the pressure, to date, is working.

(AP Photo/Manu Fernandez)

(AP) ? Gold medal at stake or nothing at all, the U.S. Olympic basketball team was bringing its best Tuesday.

Being back on the Dream Team's turf required it.

Carmelo Anthony came off the bench to score 23 of his 27 points in the first half, and the Americans beat Spain 100-78 in a rematch of the gold-medal game ? and possible preview of the next one.

LeBron James added 25 and Kevin Durant had 13, including 10 in the first 3 ? minutes of the third quarter to help the U.S. break open the teams' final exhibition game before heading to London.

"We knew that this was a big game," U.S. guard Chris Paul said. "When Coach K talked to us, he told us this was probably the biggest game here in Barcelona since the '92 team was here, so we approached it like that and it was a good win for us."

The teams played a memorable gold-medal game four years ago, the Americans pulling away for a 118-107 victory after leading by only four points with under 2? minutes left.

This one turned out much easier once the U.S. controlled the final three quarters.

"It was a good test for us tonight, but the exhibition games are over, the friendlies are over and we look forward to the real challenge of going to London," James said.

Pau Gasol scored 19 points and Oklahoma City forward Serge Ibaka, a native of the Republic of Congo who became a Spanish national last year, had 16.

Both teams have been weakened by injuries, with the U.S. missing Dwyane Wade, Dwight Howard and Chris Bosh, all key contributors in Beijing, along with Derrick Rose. The Spaniards are without point guard Ricky Rubio, and All-Star center Marc Gasol, Juan Carlos Navarro and Rudy Fernandez have battled injuries this year.

They're still the best two teams in the world and favored to meet again in the Aug. 12 gold-medal game. Spain would have a different look, as Marc Gasol was held out of this one while recovering from a left shoulder injury and backup point guard Sergio Rodriguez also sat out.

It may not matter if the Americans play like this in the games that count.

Spain's players said Monday that while they would try to win this tuneup, the bigger priority was preparing for London. The Americans responded that the Spaniards, playing in front of their home fans, would be compelled to go all out in hopes of a victory.

Spain seemed to be playing for real, but was simply overmatched and the Americans eventually ran away from them.

"Well, it was definitely a game that we would have loved to play better as a team," Gasol said. "We made too many mistakes which they capitalized and they played their game. They're a quick unit, very athletic and once they were able to convert a few fast-break opportunities due to our turnovers, it was hard for us."

The Americans, who would have had Howard, Bosh and Blake Griffin on this roster, believe their quickness and versatility will overcome their size problems, and that's what happened in this one.

Spain's size advantage was evident early, especially once Tyson Chandler, the only center on the U.S. roster, went to the bench with two quick fouls. The Spanish pounded the ball inside to Ibaka, who accounted for three straight Spain baskets on dunks, and the Americans were forced to use a timeout ? that never happened 20 years ago when the Dream Team ruled Barcelona ? after Victor Sada's jumper made it 22-13 with 1:40 left in the opening period.

But though Gasol and Ibaka had an obvious advantage inside, neither could deal with Anthony on the perimeter. He made five 3-pointers in the first half while often appearing unguarded behind the arc.

He opened and closed a 20-6 burst with 3-pointers as the Americans went from four down to ahead 42-32 with about 3 minutes left in the half. They later went up by 13 before taking a 48-40 lead into the locker room.

Gasol had the first basket of the second half, but Durant dominated the next few minutes as the Americans extended the lead to 60-46. Russell Westbrook scored seven straight later in the period, his steal and dunk making it 69-48 with 4:19 left.

Spain trimmed it to 12 later in the period, but never had a real shot of getting back into it.

At times it felt like a serious game at Palau Sant Jordi, where nearly every seat was filled well before an energetic pregame ceremony, in which the U.S. national anthem was performed live, instead of the usual recording.

But it also felt like a show, something along the lines of the NBA All-Star game. Navarro was honored before the game for his 200 appearances for Spain, and Dream Teamers Chris Mullin, David Robinson and Clyde Drexler were introduced during a first-quarter timeout. The teams took a photo together after the game as confetti shot out behind them.

The U.S. had a pair of quality tests in Barcelona, beating Argentina 86-80 on Sunday and going 5-0 overall in exhibition play. But the Americans were pushed by all three opponents with legitimate NBA size, the two here and Brazil in an 80-69 victory in Washington.

"We played against two very tough teams in Argentina and Spain, so I think it made us a better team," Kobe Bryant said. "I think it showed us some things that we want to do differently, some things that we're doing right, and I think because of it we feel pretty good about our chances."

The U.S. and Spain were drawn into opposite Olympic pools, so they wouldn't play until the elimination round. And it's likely to be at the very end of it.

Is It Time for a New Payroll System? - Hagel and Company

July 24th, 2012 by Hagel and Company

As a busy payroll manager, it is critical to have an easy, flexible solution that helps you process payroll accurately and quickly, every time. Your payroll solution should help you stay up to date with changing compliance requirements and accurately manage taxes. It is also important to keep your employees happy by providing secure access to payroll information and offering a variety of pay options.

What type of payroll system is used at your company? Is it paper-based? Do you run a legacy system or utilize payroll capabilities in your small business accounting solution? When was your system implemented or updated?

In today?s business climate, companies are facing a variety of budgetary and regulatory constraints that may not have existed when your payroll system was first put in place. Here are five signs it may be time for a new payroll system:

  1. Old system, bigger company. If your company has grown, chances are you?ve outgrown your old payroll system. Your system should be able to accommodate demanding requirements including a wide range of earning types, including base pay, premium pay, and tax only. Make sure you can meet the unique needs of each employee by offering a variety of pay options such as unlimited direct deposit accounts or PayCards.
  2. Compliance issues. Many government agencies are stepping up the enforcement of employment laws and issuing fines for violations. Can your payroll system handle the reporting requirements of the U.S. Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and Equal Pay Act? Will you be able stay compliant with new regulations like the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA)?
  3. Taxes and filing complications. Managing taxes is probably the most difficult part of the payroll process. Are you confident that your system is accurate and keeping your company up to date with payments? From federal and state tax tables to FICA wages and tax withholding, if your payroll taxes are prone to errors, your company can face steep fines and penalties for mistakes.
  4. Payroll stands alone. If your payroll system isn?t integrated with HR, time and attendance, or accounting systems, it?s time for a change. An integrated system eliminates duplicate data entry, simplifies reporting, and automatically links benefit plans in HR to deductions in payroll.
  5. Employees aren?t connected. HR and payroll managers are being asked to increase employee satisfaction whenever possible. Does your payroll system have self service capabilities? Using a self service portal, employees can view and print pay stubs, W-2s and authorize W-4 form changes. Investing in self service technology is an investment in your employees.
